School-based programs

Schools provide a great opportunity to build the resilience of young people

Schools provide an effective way of promoting mental health, resilience and help-seeking amongst young people.

The Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) program has the strongest evidence-base including the best outcomes specific to suicidal behaviour, and the flexibility to be integrated into any school environment.

Suicide prevention training will also give school staff and parents the skills and confidence to identify, talk to and refer students who may be at risk of suicide.

In 2018, more than 900 students across 21 schools in the Murrumbidgee participated in Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM). Suicide prevention is everyone’s business and we all have a role to play and I would like to extend our thanks to the volunteer YAM helpers, without your contribution we would not have been able to run this life saving program.
